Summer Visit: Boston, Lincs

Saturday 12 August 2017 at 08:30am

Boston is a fascinating town with a long and important history. It is best known for The Stump, its rather strange-looking but extremely prominent church tower visible across the Fens and far out to sea. And it is with the sea that Boston first made its mark, as a Hanseatic port, part of a huge cartel which extended from Novgorod and Moscow to Lisbon. The sea enabled contact to be made with post-Reformation religious rebels, culminating in the departure of the Pilgrim Fathers some of whom took the name of their home town to found Boston, Mass. The draining of the fens and then the coming of the railways contributed to the town’s “regeneration” and led to the attractive town we see today.

Cost: £16 which includes coffee on arrival and a walking tour.
